Artspace is thrilled to be sending Zackary Steiner-Fox to participate in the Varda Artists Residency (VAR) in Sausalito, California. Zackary will be one of the first artists to take part in the programme, which includes accommodation and a workspace on the SS Vallejo, the now stationary 136 year old houseboat located in the San Francisco Bay area. The passenger ferry - which has hosted artists from Allen Ginsberg to Ruth Asawa - will now support artists, writers and curators through the annual #artistresidency.

Zackary is an emerging artist whose practice is engaged with queer culture, the fashion industry and identity politics. When considering the specific climate of the nearby city of San Francisco, and how fashion, contemporary art and queer identity are juxtaposed within the context of the city, Artspace and VAR agreed Zackary is an excellent fit for the residency. Both parties consider Zackary’s practice as a potential bridge builder between the young art communities of these cities. Zackary's residency begins in May 2015 and runs for 3 months.

Zackary Steiner-Fox (b.1991, Auckland) graduated from Elam School of Fine Art with a BFA (Hons) in 2013. Their work focuses on a queer phenomenology, explored through sculptural objects and environments that exemplify a kind of narrated subjectivity, highlighting aspects of queer identities that are used to dismiss and discredit actual queer experience. Recent exhibitions include: Queering Ecologies, curated by Jaimee Stockman Young and Chris Lorimer, Allpress Gallery, Auckland, 2015; Latent Cosmic Power, Gloria Knight, Auckland, 2014 (solo); New Graduate Works, Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland, 2013 and trustno123456, Projectspace B431, Auckland, 2013.
The residency is possible through a newly formed partnership between Artspace and VAR, and is kindly supported by The Chartwell Trust.
