Lovely Midget
Crystal System
20 February - 20 March
Under the moniker of Lovely Midget, Rachel Shearer creates music from sounds that have been digitally stripped and scrubbed down to their raw underlying textures. These are then painstakingly reconstructed into new audio environments.
Crystal System seeks to work as both an aural representation of a chandelier but also refers to the 'crystal' in archaic radio technology. Utilising number systems naturally found in growing crystals, a looped sequence is constructed to act as an endless signal.

Auditions
ethnic music from the culture of memory
20 March - 20 April
Auditions is a work which uses the memories of 10 performing vocalists. By recasting the ear-worm, Auditions uses the audio flash-card in the ear to trigger a vocal response from the ten audition vocalists.
Auditions is social music exercise for the memory orchestra - performers with ambitions in mimicry become an instrument. The producers devised an audio conductor by shattering and reconfigured 99 popular songs and constructed an arrangement in patterns and random reconfigurations. Inaudible cues are heard by the performers on CD walkmans that instructs them to sing the part and pause accordingly. The composition is a strategy- a "covert choreography" on the performers, who mimic songs from the canon of Italian popular music in this case. Auditions is a social music composed out of memory, a systems music which plays the performer's recognition of popular song fragments, when the antonymous parts combine as a symphony of stuttering, autism and euphoric mimicry, the result is as much a vocal orchestra as an exercise in social choreography. Sampling from the human archive.

Michael Morley
The Fuck Chairs/LSD-25
20 June - 20 July
The Fuck Chairs are an ensemble of machines that Morley has collected
over the last fifteen years. In their capacity as "band" Morley operates as the technician and manager in the enterprise.
It is the hope that at the very least the machines dictate the action. Synthesisers are wired up to trigger each other in a sequence pre-determined by pop music itself. Selected popular music tracks are stripped of the polish that is laboured on them and made to work as compositional triggers within a new framework.
The three tracks represented here are part of an ongoing series of machine determined compositions that Morley has been working on for the last five years. Over thirty cd-r's exist of this ongoing compositional experiment.
Morley attempts to render painting out to the most tragic of cul-de-sac's, the idea that painting and freewill are related. Each of the works is the pathetic search for truth and meaning in a void of stupidity. That each painting relates to an exact dose of the hallucinogen LSD-25 in no way implies that this dose was used in the creation of the work.
