Artspace NZ presents FAFSWAG: Disruption Vogue Ball

FAFSWAG is a visual arts incubator for queer indigenous creatives working collaboratively to activate public space and disavow false representations of queer brown identities and bodies.

FAFSWAG: DISRUPTION

'DISRUPTION', Pati Solomona Tyrell, Jermaine Dean, Akashi fisiinaua, Moe Laga, 2017

"The text book definition for disruption is "disturbance or problems which interrupt an event, activity, or process" - There is a process alive and well in Auckland that excludes Queer Indigenous Identities from occupying public space in a way that is meaningful and transformative.

We present this event to encourage our community to disturb that peace and sleepy statuesque to generate meaningful space that forges new and inclusive processes between institutional spaces and the lived realities of indigenous LGBT+ identities."

- FAFSWAG

FAFSWAG was born in South Auckland. It is definitely liberating to be part of their Vogueing Balls, and participating in the ongoing transformation of brown, queer, and restless bodies. Masculinities and femininities are being redefined again and again, and with the participation of the community, one can recognise how styles, personalities and bodies compete with each other with love, self expression and passion.

From the beginning, FAFSWAG with Tanu Gago’s artistic direction was very careful with the invite from Artspace NZ, and they have waited for the right time to present their ball. There is definitely a Pacific-specific understanding of gender politics, which is related to the history of self determination, land and class in this country, and FAFSWAG is a collective movement born on the grounds of this social reality. Artspace NZ proudly presents the Disruption Ball from FAFSWAG on the White Night of Auckland Arts Festival.
