Gallery Plans

Our building was designed by Ron Sang and opened in 1970. Originally designed as a major Post Office, it still houses the NZ Post Newton branch as well as Artspace and the New Zealand Film Archive. The 1997 Artspace refit of the first floor was designed by award winning architect Nicholas Stevens and made possible through the support of the Farmer family, Jenny Gibbs, the Chartwell Trust and Alan Gibbs. The refit created the three main gallery spaces depicted above. The dimensions and construction are as follows:
Main gallery 12 x 10m | stud 3.35m | ceiling 4.13m
Long gallery 15.39 x 3.83m | stud 2.55m
Small gallery 6.31 x 3.25m | stud 2.55m
Floors polyurethaned concrete
Walls plasterboard
Ceiling suspended plaster acoustic tiles
Lighting main gallery - natural light through a frosted glass clerestory and fluorescents
long gallery - fluorescents | small gallery - no fixed lighting
Power is available throughout the gallery spaces
